Social Work Graduate Student Internship Program – Elevate your social work career with hands-on experience at the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). The VHA hosts the most extensive and comprehensive clinical training program for social workers in the United States. Through the Columbia VA Health Care System’s Master of Social Work (MSW) Health Professions Trainee (HPT) Program, Advanced Standing and second-year MSW students gain invaluable experience in various social work disciplines within a healthcare environment.

Stipends

Stipends are available for clinical internship positions, though they are contingent upon availability. It’s important to note that the Macro Social Work track is a non-stipend placement.

Internship Duration

The internship aligns with your academic calendar, typically running from August to April. During this period, Social Work Health Professions Trainees (HPTs), also known as interns, must fulfill specific practicum hours.

Practicum Hours Requirements

To meet the practicum hours requirement, interns are expected to complete:

• 500 practicum hours over two semesters.
• 16 hours weekly, split into two eight-hour days.

Eligibility Requirements

Eligible students must:

• Be in their second year of an MSW program or in an Advanced Standing status at the time of the internship.
• Be enrolled in one of the affiliated institutions:
  • Florida State University
  • Savannah State University
  • University of Alabama
  • University of Kentucky
  • University of North Carolina Charlotte
  • University of South Carolina
  • Winthrop University

Internship Placements

Students interested in applying for the internship must choose between placements at Dorn VAMC or Columbia VAHCS CBOCs, as only one application per applicant is allowed.
